Rimscout Update Q2 2025: Customised PowerShell tests in monitoring: How to use the custom sensor

In modern IT infrastructures, classic monitoring via ping or HTTP is often no longer sufficient. Especially when it comes to individual requirements or specific internal processes, flexible measurement options are required. With the new Custom Sensor, Rimscout is expanding its IT monitoring options: PowerShell scripts can now be used specifically to measure individual system metrics, which is ideal for complex or non-standardised scenarios. By executing freely definable PowerShell scripts, data can now also be collected that goes beyond classic metrics such as latency times or performance counters.

Whether network utilisation of individual applications, the status of certain services or user-defined checks, everything that can be measured via PowerShell can now be integrated and analysed in Rimscout. This makes Rimscout a customised monitoring solution that can be adapted precisely to your own IT requirements.

What is the Custom Sensor?

The Custom Sensor executes PowerShell scripts in the user context, once or multiple times per minute. Custom scripts can be uploaded and executed to perform customised measurements. In this way, almost any values can be recorded as long as they can be queried via PowerShell, which is ideal for specific requirements beyond standardised protocols.

Typical application examples:

• Access to services that require authentication
• Recording specific application metrics
• Reading system metrics such as network utilisation
• Measuring the access speed to file servers, e.g. via SMB

Security and responsibility:

• The scripts are transferred from the Rimscout portal to the client in encrypted form
• Changes to the script are not possible locally
• Scripts must be able to run without administrator rights
• Clear runtime and return conditions apply (max. 1 value, < 1 minute)
• Who can create or edit scripts is defined via the ‘Custom Sensor Editor’ role in the authorisation system

The custom sensor makes Rimscout even more flexible, especially for individual requirements or complex environments.
